Mitchell Wiebe: VampSites

See All Edukits

Fun for kids using black light and performance!

The VampSite is a fantastical world where art and life mix. The artist, Mitchell Wiebe, has created a place where each of us becomes a performer in a strange and wondrous environment.

Wiebe works in painting, installation (using 3-D objects to alter the gallery space), and performance. In VampSites, he adopts a distinctive persona who emerges from a fictive world inhabited by his array of fantastical animalesque characters.

Using this Culture Kit, you will create a mask that is inspired by the imagined characters in Wiebe’s paintings. The Kit encourages you to learn about performance art. Performance art is when an artist responds to an environment or situation without a script, and sometimes even without an audience!

Wear your mask and imagine you are a character in one of the artist’s paintings. How would you move? How would you speak? What would you think of the VampSite?

You are encouraged to wear your mask and take photos or video of your performance to share with family and friends.
