In Art on Demand 1.2, artists Ryan Cadarette and Tanya Kaario express their relationship to their art as one heavily laden with emotional evocation.

The post-impressionist painter and art writer, Maurice Denis, remarked: “Remember, that a picture, before it is a picture of a battle horse, a nude woman, or some story, is essentially a flat surface covered in colours arranged in a certain order” asserting that aesthetic pleasure is to be found in the composition of painting itself not its subject.

Ryan Cadarette is part of the 1% of the population affected by a synesthetic condition called Chromesthesia. This condition causes sounds to involuntarily invoke an experience of colour. The colours used in the artist’s paintings are those that his condition of Chromesthesia allows him to experience as a synesthetic response when listening to music. Cadarette’s work directly reflects qualities style of proficiency and improvisation present in early 20th century Jazz music.

Abstract Expressionism is a form of abstract art that aims at subjective emotional expression and improvisation with particular emphasis on the creative spontaneous act. Such artworks often stand as a reflection of the artist’s individual psyche and accord the highest importance to process. Tanya Kaario’s paintings are heavily process based. She expresses the calming effects of colour on her psyche and finds the art making process allows her to intimately express the influences of her childhood and Finnish culture. Kaario uses intuition to create dynamic layering and texture in her work which give her paintings a three-dimensional feel.

Though different stylistically, both Cadarette and Kaario’s works centre on themes of colour and emotion and the affect these elements have on the psyche. When paired side by side, the representational and abstract works remind us of the power of formal aesthetic qualities to elicit an emotional response.
