This edition of Art on Demand features selections from a series of large acrylic and charcoal paintings by Dallas-born artist Collin Patrick, inspired by the ancient wisdom found in King Solomon’s Book of Proverbs (c. 1000 BC). The paintings reflect on knowledge transfer between generations, the Western way of life from a Black perspective, and the stresses these circumstances place on father-son bonds. Patrick regards the Book of Proverbs as a “man-growing” book and uses it as a framework to contextualize some of his own personal contradictions. These works embody key themes from the artist’s lived experience, such as cultural competitiveness, forgiveness, and the healing of a strained father-son relationship.
