In Art on Demand 1.3, artists Olivia de Fleuriot and Jessica Hurd examine the archival nature of photography and the relationship of the medium to memory and embodiment. Writer and critic Susan Sontag states, “Although there is a sense in which the camera does indeed capture reality, not just interpret it, photographs are as much an interpretation of the world as paintings and drawings are.” Both artists have a unique way of combining the mechanical process of photography with the more immediate act of painting to express their relationship to their environment.

Olivia de Fleuriot’s series Cityscapes explores the space between people in the urban environment using paint on photographs. By placing the camera on her abdomen de Fleuriot records the environment before her through an act of chance. The use of photographs in Cityscapes is a kind of uncalculated proof – a trace of embodiment amongst the ambiguous, painted forms of the city walkers.

Pointing to the intensely personal nature of memories, Jessica Hurd uses found photographs from her father’s childhood as a source of inspiration for her series. Through this process she attempts to construct some memory of the past. However, as she states, “I am not able to fully capture the experiences of the moment.” The red blocks of colour in the paintings represent this incomplete picture. Through this work Hurd questions whether memory obliterates reality or is itself an act of discovery.
