We often make conclusions based on perception. The ability to sense the world around us helps us to understand the political, social and natural environment. In Art on Demand 2.2 Claire Sarfeld explores the concept of perception, using line, form and colour to interpret her surroundings in a series of fluid abstractions.

is a recent graduate of OCAD University in Toronto now living in the Fraser Valley. She cites her physical environment as a primary influence, whether that be the unyielding edges of the built world, or the irregular shapes found in nature. Though the artist defines her practice as “a mode of visual storytelling” she does not share her perceptions in representational terms, opting instead for a more immediate, expressive approach that embraces chance and spontaneity.

These recent compositions incorporate a multitude of techniques associated with the Abstract Expressionists, balancing the structured lines of geometric abstraction with organic gestural marks and techniques like dripping and pouring. The directness of Sarfeld’s technique, swift, sketch-like brush strokes and the dynamic movement of her broadly painted lines convey the sense that these works are the artist’s response to what is both seen and felt.

In works like Slick and Infuse the artist creates an energetic surface using both line and colour. The sharp edges of black and beige forms are balanced by softer shapes in translucent white and soothing grey-blues. The overall effect creates a sense of depth while also acknowledging the flatness of the painted plane.

Sarfeld’s painted perceptions are an open invitation to respond in kind, to interpret her subjective experience through our own lens and to consider how the line, shape and colour of our own surroundings informs our daily lives.
