Art on Demand 3.1 features the work of photographic artist Desirée Patterson. An emerging artist who is dedicated to creating works that highlight a fundamental, humanistic connection to the natural world. Patterson works primarily with photographic overlays, consisting of both landscape and figurative compositions. Her compositions capture conceptual perspectives and her personal observations of her surroundings. Ultimately, Patterson’s work provides insight to the disconnection of the contemporary individual to their own natural world.

The Éveil Series presents viewers with a unique allegory. The French term Éveil refers to the state of awakening: a moment of recognition, realization, or coming into awareness. This transformation of consciousness ignites a desire for change. Patterson depicts our relationship to nature and the contrasting relationship that we have to consumption. Images of industrialization, urban settings, and nature, are layered directly onto isolated male and female forms. The intent of this series is to remind viewers of our kinship to the natural world and to draw awareness to the impact of our behaviour. Éveil brings awareness to our increasing detachment from the natural world and the risks inherent to our reliance on disposable technology.

Patterson’s most recent series, Enraciné, explores the challenge of environmental sustainability in a society where consciousness is rooted in the industrialized world. Imagery drawn from nature is integrated with urban scenes in these abstracted compositions. The rigorous blending of these disparate images, coupled with the inversion of the urban forms, reveals the underlying paradox that natural resources are the root of industrialized society.

Patterson’s work presents a complex view of our relationship to nature. Economic growth and endless urban development are seemingly signs of prosperity for society. Patterson asks what the ultimate toll of this activity will be on our individual bodies and on the planet.
