Emilie Kvist, from the series Distortion of Time and Memory – Did We Know Them?, 2021, copper plate prints on Stonehenge paper

The work of Cassidy Luteijn and Emilie Kvist explores time and memory in relation to landscape and family connections. In Luteijn’s series, The Nature of Painting, traditional painting materials are used in a sculptural manner to capture her interactions with the natural landscape, distilling her memory of these experiences into basic components such as shape and colour. Luteijn’s memories of these landscapes are tied to a specific moment in time. However, over time landscapes may change due to extreme climate; these places, as they once were, will only live on in our memories. Kvist, using an inherited photograph from her grandmother as a starting point, distorted the image and used an experimental process to create an installation of prints that fades gradually. This series, The Distortion of Time and Memory – Did We Know Them?  speaks to the way memories of people and relationships can fade when there is no longer anyone to remember or identify them. Each artist pushes the boundaries of their respective practices, expanding the definitions of both printmaking and painting. Luteijn and Kvist use these experimental processes to aptly illustrate the distillation and fading of memory in relation to time.
